It looked like Milorad Cavic of Serbia beat American Michael Phelps yesterday in the 100-meter butterfly, but the electronic timing system gave the gold to Phelps by a margin of ONE ONE-HUNDREDTH OF A SECOND. The Serbs protested and, considering it was so close, officials actually allowed the Serbian coaches to view the frame-by-frame PC-enhanced photo finish results, which, they agreed, confirmed Phelps’ win. Without all that technology, and relying on judges with stopwatches, it’s likely that Phelps would have been erroneously declared the second-place finisher.
